Laser Epilation

Excessive Hair Growth

The ideal of beauty is changing in the time course and people behave according to the contemporary fashion trends. Today the excessive hair growth is undesirable, especially for women. More than 90 % of the clients demanding excessive hair removal are women from various countries and cultural backgrounds. They want to remove hair on face – usually on the upper lip and chin, and on the body – on the calves, in the bikini area and in the armpit. Men wish to remove hair usually on the back and on the shoulders.

What is the cause of the excessive hair growth?

In most cases the excessive hair growth is hereditary. People with darker skin, e.g. coming from Mediterranean have more conspicuous hair and that is natural. But some diseases, taking some drugs, or transsexualism may be also causes of excessive hair growth. Mostly the cause is a disorder of endocrine glands. It is thus necessary to be examined by your physician before you decide to undergo laser epilation.

How does the laser treatment work?

Laser beam is absorbed by skin pigment called melanin, which is placed in the cells of hair root. Light energy is transformed into heat energy and burns the hair root. This removes the hair permanently.
Every hair on the body has its active growth phase, then the quiescent phase follows, and finally the phase when the hair fall out. The hair root then remains inactive for some time before the new growth phase begins. In this phase all the cells are very active and so are the cells producing the pigment, which in this phase contain large amount of melanin.
To affect maximum of the hairs in the growth phase it is necessary to repeat the treatment in regular intervals.

How many times do we have to repeat the treatment?

The growth phase has different length depending on the part of the body. We have to determine the date of the next session carefully to be able to hit most of the hairs in this phase. Usually at least 3 sessions are needed to treat particular part of the body. In those parts of the body, where the hair growth depends on hormonal regulation (i.e. upper lip, chin), more sessions are needed.
Your physician will inform you.
Laser beam best affects dense and dark hairs of the individuals with pale skin. Brown and blond hairs need more sessions. The results of laser epilation of red and grey hairs are very poor.

Is the procedure painful?

A part of the laser is a glass plate where cold water streams and through which goes also the laser beam. This plate cools and calms the skin.
During the procedure the client may feel slight tingling or stinging at the treated area. These feelings are highly individual. At the sensitive parts of the body, i.e. armpits or neck, we may apply the anaesthetic cream.

The eyes have to be protected during the whole procedure by special glasses and the client must not take them off without the physician’s approval.

How to prepare for the procedure?

Do not remove the hair by plucking (wax, tweezers or epilator).
You have to shave the hairs one day before the treatment.
The procedure cannot be performed on tanned skin (sun, solarium). You will have to wait until the colour fades out.
Protect the treated skin from sunlight at least for 1 month after the treatment. We recommend using sunbathing creams with high sun protection factor (30 and more) while the skin is still sensitive. In summer we recommend to use this creams in the period between the procedures to prevent emerging of pigment spots.

Side Effects and Complications

If you keep all the recommendations, the epilation will be efficient and without a greater risk.
There may occur temporary depigmentations at the darker types of skin and there is a possibility of mild burns with reddish skin and small blisters, but these complications are really very rare.
